Here, a transmitter is used to impose the circulation of an electric current on the pipe or cable, whereas the receiver helps detect the field created by the current. The second method is passive locating. It does not require a transmitter as the receiver detects a field created by the current that is already circulating on the cable.

There are three basic ways to apply a signal to the utility:

  • the conductive mode (by connecting directly to the conductor with clips and a ground stake)
