Taper Taps are most commonly used as starter taps for tough blind holes. The gentle taper of the cutting edge allows you to cut a straight hole in hard materials. Taper taps are popular types of taps and are generally what can be included in a Tap & Die Set.
Bottoming Taps have no taper at the end as they’re used to thread all the way to the bottom of their reach. They are also useful for threading blind holes. It is recommended to cut the hole with a Taper Tap at first, and then finish with a Bottoming Tap.
Plug Taps have less sharp tapers to the cutting edges. They are in between bottoming and taper taps, because they provide a gradual cutting action that is less aggressive than the bottoming tap, but more aggressive than the taper tap.
Pipe Dies are used for cutting edges that create external threads on pipe, conduit, bolts, or rods when the die head turns in the threader. These dies are generally numbered and placed in a slot of the same number in a compatible die head, which then should be connected to a compatible threader.
Spiral Point Taps have straight flutes with a slanted angular gash in each to manage the chips. They are ideal for machine tapping through holes or blind holes with normal bottom clearance. These Taps are also known as Gun Taps as they shoot the chip ahead of the tap and reduce loading and clogging in the flutes.
